A Normal Day of a Vet Tech

What Is A Normal Day of a Vet Tech?

Veterinary TechnicianA normal day of a vet tech tends to involve taking on a number of different responsibilities, all of which can change from day to day. Since the vet tech is an integral part of the veterinary care team, a normal day of a vet tech tends to involve fulfilling that role and understanding where you are most needed at any given time.

There are many tasks that you might be asked to perform during a normal day of a vet tech. Some of these include:

  • Obtaining and recording the case history of patients
  • Collecting specimens from patients
  • Performing laboratory procedures with the collected specimens
  • Providing specialized care to patients
  • Assisting in performing diagnostics as well as surgical and medical procedures
  • Exposing and developing radiographs
  • Communicating with pet owners about the health of their animals
  • Supervising and training other personnel
  • Assisting with surgical nursing and dental prophylaxis
It is important to note that, although a normal day of a vet tech may involve assisting the veterinarian, the vet tech tends to not actually perform the diagnosis. In addition, the vet tech tends to not perform surgery or prescribe medications to animals. Similarly, there are many activities that may be prohibited by the particular state in which you work, which means you will not be able to conduct those activities.

A normal day of a vet tech also tends to involve performing tasks as assigned by the veterinarian, though the veterinarian must supervise all of your activities in order to ensure they are performed appropriately.

A normal day of a vet tech may include additional responsibilities if employed in a biomedical research facility. In this case, a normal day of a vet tech might also involve assisting in the implementing research projects, which will involve supervising the care and the handling of the animals within the facility.
