Becoming a Vet Tech
Look Into Becoming a Vet Tech
If you dream of one day becoming a vet tech, there are several things that you should know about the field before you pursue your education. One of the most important things you need to know before becoming a vet tech is that, while you will find much satisfaction in helping to save the lives of animals and in keeping them healthy, you will likely experience the loss of animals as well. Therefore, if you are so strongly attached to animals that you will be emotionally devastated at the loss of some, becoming a vet tech might not be right for you.
If you are certain that becoming a vet tech is the right decision for you, you will need to undergo the proper education in order to make this dream a reality. You can usually pursue your dream of becoming a vet tech either online or off, though pursuing your degree off line might be inconvenient or even impossible if a program is not offered near to where you live. In either case, becoming a vet tech will require completing the same type of coursework and completing a clinical component during which you work with live animals.
Since clinical experience is one of the most critical components of becoming a vet tech, you will still need to complete this portion of your training even when completing courses online. In most cases, you will complete this portion of your training with an approved veterinary clinic in your area. This clinical experience component is often referred to as a practicum, a preceptorship, or an externship.
Becoming a vet tech through an online program can have its advantages since you will complete your clinical experience with a nearby veterinary facility. If you do a good job with your clinical experience, you will have a local veterinary facility at which you already have a foot in the door, which will increase your chances of getting a job soon after graduation.
