Becoming a Certified Vet Tech
Becoming a certified vet tech is an exciting moment in any animal lover's life. In order to become a certified vet tech in your state, however, you will need to look into your state's regulations. This way, you can be certain you are following the right path toward becoming a certified vet tech.
Regardless of the state where you live and wish to be employed, the first step toward becoming a certified vet tech is to complete the proper training. This will require going to school in order to obtain at least an associates degree, though earning a bachelor's degree may be required if you wish to become a certified vet tech. If you wish to pursue an associates degree, you can expect it to take two years for you to complete the program if you attend full time. If you pursue a bachelor's degree, on the other hand, it will take approximately four years to earn your degree.
After you have completed your training, the next step toward becoming a certified vet tech is typically undergoing some form of testing. This testing is meant to determine if you have a solid grasp of the materials and is typically regulated by the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. In some states, you must pass this examination and become a certified vet tech before you can be licensed to practice.
Becoming a certified vet tech is a good step to take in your career even if you are not required to become certified in order to practice. By becoming a certified vet tech, you demonstrate to your potential employer that you are competent and capable of producing quality work. As such, some employers will not even grant an interview to you unless you are a certified vet tech with the proper training and degree.
