How To Start With Veterinary Technician Continuing Education

After completing a two or four year course in veterinary technology, you can obtain a job as a vet tech in any hospital, clinic or animal laboratories. Once you have gained work experience and a solid educational background, you are required to complete 40 hours of veterinary technician continuing education. However, be aware that the veterinary technician continuing education is not required for the year you initially received your vet license.

Veterinary technician continuing education is any program designed to enhance your knowledge and improve skills in providing services relevant to animal care. The veterinary technician continuing education can be obtained through various organizations, such as the Council on Post-Secondary Education, U.S. Department of Education, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, Federal, state and local government agencies and Joint Commission on health care organizations.

You can also obtain veterinary technician continuing education through any college or educational institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, residency programs conducted in hospitals and through other organizations approved by the Board.

Some techs obtain their veterinary technician continuing education from self-study. However, the self-study methods should include a written examination, clinical training and post evaluation. You should complete at least 8 to 20 hours of self-study every renewal period. All training materials should pertain to the practice of veterinary medicine.

Vet techs that have completed his or her veterinary technician continuing education are not required to submit copies of their continuing education certificates during renewal period. However, you can sign a renewal application or submit an online form swearing under perjury penalties that you completed veterinary technician continuing education. After the renewal, veterinary techs will be chosen in random for auditing and submitting copies of their continuing education certificates. If you cannot comply with the audit or is unable to send your certificate copies, the Board may proceed with actions against your license or registration.
