Many people think that veterinary technician training is all about completing bookwork. While veterinary technician training does involve completing a great deal studies and reading of books, there is far more to the studies than you might think.
One of the most important aspects of veterinary technician training is completing a practicum or a training sequence that involves directly working with animals. After you complete your basic classes, which will involve learning about things such as animal anatomy and other topics directly related to animals, you will be called upon to utilize those skills in a real life setting.
If you are obtaining your veterinary technician training through a brick and mortar institution, you might be able to complete the practicum portion on campus. Some schools that provide veterinary technician training actually have veterinary clinics on campus in which you will work, learn, and train. In this way, you can work directly with animals and participate in both non-emergency and emergency work.
If you complete your veterinary technician training through an online school, you will need to set up your practicum to be completed with a nearby veterinary office or other appropriate facility. The online school and the facility will then work closely together in order to make sure you obtain the type of training necessary.
In some cases, a brick and mortar veterinary technician training program will also have you work with outside veterinary clinics rather than complete your practicum on campus. The advantage to completing this aspect of your veterinary technician training with an outside clinic is that you may be offered a job at that clinic once your training is complete. Although there is no guarantee that this will happen, it is certainly a great way to get your foot in the door.
